McDonald’s development group decides on whether a restaurant will open. There are a number of factors which need to be considered when planning where to build a new McDonald’s restaurant. Population density, retail catchment areas and existing network coverage are some of the most important issues in terms of establishing projected sales volumes. Once projected sales volumes have been worked out, these then need to be looked at in relation to the cost of operating a restaurant.

Along with many other potential sites, McDonald’s will look at Alnwick as an opportunity to build a new restaurant. This year McDonald’s has been concentrating on re-vamping existing restaurants rather than building new ones, and 80 stores have been redeveloped. But plans for the future are to continue to open more restaurants.

McDonald’s is looking to increase the amount of restaurants generally throughout Scotland, as the company believes that there is enough demand to warrant developing more outlets. Unfortunately it can be a slow process to find the right place to build and develop a new site. At present there is no suitable site available in Inverness but McDonald’s will continue looking into any opportunities for further development in Scotland.

You say you don't build restaurants near schools, but howcome there's one right nextdoor to the Beijing Normal University, which has a primary school located inside the campus, right next door to the entrance next to the McDonalds? There's a highschool located nearby too and kids pour into the McDonalds after class every single day.

Like any good retailer with lots of sites, McDonald's needs to make sure they have the right restaurants in the right locations. McDonald's has been in the UK for 31 years now, and therefore some restaurants have been in their location for almost that long too. In that time shopping habits have changed and the location of restaurants must be looked at in relation to this, and open, close or relocate where it’s relevant. This year, McDonald's UK has closed 25 restaurants from a national total of 1,250.
