16. What happens to all of the rubbish that goes in your bins? Is any of it recycled?
McDonald’s is unable to recycle any customer rubbish due to food and drink residues on the packaging that prevent it from being recycled at standard recycling mills in the UK. Trials are taking place around this issue, though, and the company is hoping to find a solution soon. McDonald’s does recycle cardboard waste, which represents 25 percent of a restaurant’s total waste. And the company is currently exploring other opportunities to divert waste from landfill, including the generation of green electricity from waste.

Yes, the large majority of McDonald’s restaurants in the UK currently recycle all their cardboard waste. It is the company’s aim to have all restaurants recycling cardboard waste by the end of 2006 and the company is also currently undertaking trials to introduce recycling of customer packaging waste in restaurants. This poses some challenges due to food residues on the packaging that prevent the packaging from being recycled at standard recycling mills.

18. Would it not be better for the enviroment if you used plates for customers who are sitting in?
McDonald’s utilises disposable packaging for all food purchases, be they eat-in or take away for reasons of speed and efficiency. A typical restaurant in London’s West End may serve between 700 to 800 customers in one hour. McDonald’s customers expect to receive good, hot food, quickly, and as such it is not operationally practicable to use plates in restaurants for sit in customers.

19. You keep being asked whether you recycle anything and you reply that your packing is made from recycled paper where possible. However, that is NOT answering the question: Do you recycle used packaging? Most of it just seems to go in the bin.
At the moment McDonald’s doesn't recycle used packaging as this poses some challenges due to left over food residues on the packaging that prevent it from being recycled at standard recycling mills. However the company is currently running trials to introduce customer packaging waste recycling in restaurants and is also exploring other opportunities, including the generation of green electricity from waste. The large majority of McDonald’s restaurants in the UK do currently recycle all their cardboard waste and used cooking oil and McDonald’s aims to have all company restaurants recycling cardboard waste by the end of 2006.
