16. What do you do with left over food?
McDonald’s tries to minimise the amount of food waste from its restaurants. The company monitors the amount of food sold at different times throughout each day, and the restaurants use this information to ensure that they only order and prepare the amount of food that is likely to be sold. As a result McDonald’s restaurants waste less than 1% of food stock. Any restaurant serving food to the public cannot avoid some wastage, and obviously it is in everyone’s interests, especially McDonald’s, to keep waste to an absolute minimum. Any wasted food is disposed of with the general waste.

17. Why, when I buy a single burger, do you insist on giving me not only a wrapped burger, but also a paper bag which I instantly throw away? Surely this is a massive waste! Also, why no paper recycling in your restaurants?
If you don't need a bag, then please tell the crew member serving you that you don't wish to have one. This is a great way to help stop waste. McDonald’s is currently trialling different ways to recycle customer packaging waste in restaurants. This poses some challenges due to the food residues that prevent the packaging being recycled at standard recycling mills.

19. Given that around 1% (as one of your own answers states) of food goes to waste, how much material does that actually equate to, given the massive size of McDonalds as a global industry?
The actual amount of food wasted varies according to restaurant sales.

20. where do you put the rubbish from your resturants. (like burger wrappers and the boxes the happy meals come in, ect)
Unfortunately, McDonald’s cannot recycle any customer rubbish due to food and drink residues on the packaging that prevent it from being recycled at standard recycling mills in the UK, although trials are taking place aimed at finding a solution to this problem. Please note that McDonald’s does recycle its cardboard waste, which represents 25 percent of a restaurant’s total waste.

21. Is it true that unused McDonalds packaging (including leftovers from the factories) is used in third world countries as building materials in shanty towns?
No, it’s not true. McDonald’s ensures that its waste is only collected by registered waste carriers and disposed of in licensed facilities in the UK. The majority of McDonald’s packaging suppliers recycle all waste back into their own manufacturing processes, with the remainder sending their waste to a licensed recycling facility.
