79. Why you use E120 colring in your food which is cruelly extracted from the crushed caccuses of an insect, killed by immersion in hot water, sunlight, steam or ovan
This colour can be found in products throughout the food and drink industry. E120 is indeed derived from the cochineal beetle and is used in the red Smarties that are part of the McFlurry Smarties. It is a red natural colouring agent derived from the cochineal beetle and is used because it produces a red dye that is safe for human consumption. You might be interested to know that McDonald`s no longer uses E120 cochineal in their Strawberry Milkshakes. The new colouring agent is a beetroot juice concentrate E162 which is a natural extract of beetroot. (May 2007)

80. A simple yes or no answer first, then more detail if you wish. Do McDonalds as a whole UK or USA or any suppliers to the McDonalds products request directly or indirectly the use of laboratory staff and equipment to aid in the creation of taste enhancing ingredients and are these ingredients then tested on animals to confirm human consumption worthiness? Also, are you regulated by the FDA?
No. McDonald’s also does not test any product on animals. McDonald’s UK does not use flavour enhancing chemicals or other compounds in any of its meat products, except salt and pepper after cooking in the case of beef, or crispy batter in the case of chicken. It is true to say that products such as the Milkshakes do contain flavourings and additives but these are the same additives that may be found in many examples of these products, whether they are from McDonald’s or not.

84. Why do I feel more hundgry after I've eaten one of your burgers, than before? Do you put appetite stimulators in them to get people to buy more burgers?
No, there are definitely no ‘appetite stimulators’ in McDonald’s burgers. Everyone has different rates of digestion, which can affect how hungry they feel and how much they need to eat to feel full. McDonald’s food uses ingredients similar to those you can buy in the supermarket or use at home, so eating a McDonald’s burger shouldn’t make you feel any more or less full than eating another burger of a similar size.

86. why do you choose to use so many additives and e numbers in your food when it tastes perfectly ok using fresh ingreients when i have done so my self at home.
Fresh produce will always provide the best ingredients and McDonald’s tries to use them wherever possible. But cooking at home and on the scale of McDonald’s are very different, and logistics such as storage, consistency of taste and seasonal availability of produce means that additives become an essential component of modern convenience food. However, ‘E Numbers’ and additives are not all inherently bad or necessarily artificial either, paprika extract being a good example, which is E160c. They are used for a huge range of things from preservatives, to colouring agents, to stabilisers and emulsifiers that stop oil and water based ingredients from separating. E Numbers are used widely in many foods that you will find for sale in supermarkets, restaurants and elsewhere. All E Numbers and indeed all McDonald’s food and nutritional information are available online in 'Eat Smart' section at www.mcdonalds.co.uk under the 'Nutrition Counter'.

87. What e numbers are used in any of the food products?
‘E Numbers’ are used in quite a few McDonald’s products for a variety of reasons. They range from emulsifiers to help oil and water-based ingredients bond in sauces, to preservatives and colouring agents. It might be worth mentioning that not all E Numbers are necessarily artificial, paprika extract being a good example (it’s E160c). If you would like to check each product to see which E Numbers it contains, a full nutritional breakdown is available online in the ‘Eat Smart’ section at www.mcdonalds.co.uk.
