2. Hi I was just wondering why, when i produce an NUS card to get a free burger iam only offered a cheeseburger or mcflurry. I want to know why there isnt a vegetarian hot option ie, another cup of chips, onion rings, fillet etc. I think you are really disciminating against alot of vegetarian students. I look forward to your reply.
You’ll be glad to hear that McDonald’s can substitute the Cheeseburger or Hamburger on offer for a vegetarian alternative when using your NUS Discount Card. This includes a Filet-o-Fish, Spicy Veggie Deli or a Vegetable Deluxe (if available) and an alternative McFlurry which is suitable for vegetarians. Just make the Crew member serving you aware and they will see to it that an appropriate alternative is provided. (September 2008)

3. I have an illness where im not allowed High protein foods, so i always go for the veggie meal, Unfortunatly, since there has been changes to the veggie burger im unable to have this, Im on a protein restricted diet, and the burgers used now are only replacements, Like quorn, the protein content is really high. Could you bring the old veggie burgers back, At least then i know i can have a treat without worrying if my protein levels are really High.
Apologies for the slow response to your question, and thank you for your patience. It’s unfortunate that you cannot enjoy the current vegetarian options on McDonald's menu. McDonald's is constantly reviewing its menu options, in particular the vegetarian items. The current patty used in the Veggie Deluxe and the Toasted Deli Veggie Sandwich was introduced to improve overall flavour, and there are no plans to bring back the original veggie patty. However, if demand for it increases, then there is every chance that McDonald's will look seriously at bringing it back. However, you still may be able to enjoy eating at McDonald's in the meantime. Visit www.mcdonalds.co.uk and navigate to the ‘Nutrition Counter’ which is in the ‘Eat Smart’ section, you can find comprehensive nutritional content information on all McDonald's food items. This can help you make better informed decisions on your menu choices in relation to your diet. (May 2008)

4. Is it true that your restaurants have a policy to stop serving vegetarian products (not fries obviously) before closing time? I recently tried to order a Vegi Deli at about 830 in the evening to be told by the crew member this was not available after 7pm... If this is true are other minorities handed cerfews by which time they need to order their food?
Sorry to learn of your disappointment at being unable to purchase a Toasted Deli Sandwich at the time of your visit. McDonald’s does not discriminate against any of its customers. The company hopes that you can appreciate that during later times, when custom is slower and staff levels are reduced, the available menu items will become limited so that the products that are the most popular with the majority of customers are readily available and prepared. This in turn will result in some products such as the Toasted Deli Sandwiches being available as part of the main menu, served until 8pm, at participating restaurants. You may be interested to know that McDonald’s has recently reinstated the Vegetable Deluxe in order to meet the requests of customers. It will be available at participating restaurant. 5. my 3 children, aged 4, 5 and 6, are vegetarians (no meat or fish) and we as a family are appalled at the lack of variety in the happy meal option that you promote. We often come home feeling unfulfilled and the children have decided that they much prefer the options available at Burger King. or Pizza Hut. Your staff on numerous occasions have only ever offered extra french fries or carrot sticks! These do not satisfy three hungry growing boys.
Firstly McDonald's apologises unreservedly for the late reply to your question. There were some recent technical updates conducted to the site which caused some questions to slip through. Now regarding you question, McDonald's is always working hard to provide its customers with as much choice and value as possible and this is no different for vegetarian customers. Although there are some tasty options available for vegetarians, McDonald's is aware that there some new additions would be greatly appreciated. New recipes and products are always be trialled and tested by McDonald's so please check out the menu from time to time for new items appearing in the future.

6. Some years ago you had a veggie burger and veggie nuggets on your menu (in Germany and Austria, mind). Why did you stop them?
Thanks for your question. However, this website has been set up to deal primarily with questions regarding McDonald's in the UK and therefore cannot comment on the McDonald's menu item in other countries. Please visit the McDonald's Germany website at http://www.mcdonalds.de/ for more information. (June 2008)

7. are there any plans to include a decent vegetarian burger in the menu? i look at the list of meals available, and the only vegetarian option is the vile vegetarian melt - a salad roll is not a great variety. it would be nice to have a meat free or mexican/indian/chinese spiced bean burger,to choose as an alternative.
Thank you for your question and apologies for the late response. McDonald's is constantly reviewing menu options. It is important to the company that there is variety and value across the menu and McDonald's has had many questions from vegetarians on this site. Recently introduced to the menu is the Spicy Veggie Toasted Deli Sandwich, which has replaced the Veggie Melt. Other vegetarian items are the French Fries, Veggie Deluxe, Garden Side Salad, Carrot Sticks and all the Milkshakes. If you think McDonald's could improve its vegetarian options, your suggestions would be welcome. Contact the Customer Team via email at www.mcdonalds.co.uk, just click on the 'Contact Us' link.

8. I have been advised that the oil used to fry fish fillets is the same oil that is used to fry burgers etc. I am a vegetarian, and this method of cooking goes against my principles and I therefore no longer go to Mcdonalds. Please advise if this is truly the case. If so, why have customers never been advised of this. Thank you.
The beef patties in McDonald’s hamburgers are cooked, without added fat or oil, between hot plates that cook the patties from both sides - a similar cooking process to the grilling machines that are sold in a variety of kitchenware stores. The Filet-o-Fish, French Fries, Apple Pies and Veggie Deluxe are cooked in a new non-hydrogenated blend of sunflower and rapeseed oil in separate cooking fryers. These fryers are exclusively for the purpose of cooking a specific product and that product alone. When it comes to filtering oil, McDonald’s has two different types of filtering processes - although the company does not maintain a central record of the processes used in each restaurant. One process is self-filtering where oil will not be mixed from one fryer to another. The second filtering process uses the same unit across all fryers but the fryers are filtered in a specific order. So the French Fries fryer is filtered first, followed by the Veggie Deluxe fryer, the Apple Pies fryer, the chicken fryer and then the Filet-o-Fish fryer. The machine is thoroughly cleaned after every filtering session. And yes, the Apple Pie is suitable for vegetarians. however McDonald’s does not regard the Filet-o-Fish as suitable for vegetarians because the company classifies fish as meat. A full list of the McDonald’s menu items suitable for vegetarians is available online at www.mcdonaldsmenu.info or on the back of the tray liners in restaurants. 9. hi,i'm a muslim and im not sure about your food,i'm a vegeterian but i'mallowed fish and the stuff has to be alcohol free so can u please send me a list of what i'm allowed.
If you are referring to Halal, currently, McDonald's UK sells no Halal food, as the company lacks the necessary infrastructure in its supply chain to guarantee the requirements. It is something the company is currently looking at, however. The Filet-o-Fish is cooked in its own non-hydrogenated blend of sunflower and rapeseed oil in a separate part of the kitchen, away from other food items. When it comes to filtering oil, McDonald's has two different types of filtering processes - although the company does not maintain a central record of the processes used in each restaurant. All the milkshakes are suitable for vegetarians who eat dairy. The vegetarian menu offers the Veggie Deluxe burger, the Grilled Veggie Melt toasted sandwich, salads and other items such as Carrot Sticks. The French Fries are also suitable for vegetarians. And none of McDonald's products contain alcohol. JUNE '07 UPDATE: McDonald's trials Halal chicken at a restaurant in Southall, London. 10. Have you considered that more people nowadays fancy healthier, organic foods, and vegetarian meals!
Yes and McDonald's aims to provide plenty of choice and variety on the menu for all types of diets. At the moment McDonald’s offers two types of salad – Ranch and Caesar – that you can have with either Grilled Chicken or Crispy Chicken. Also some of the McDonald's menu items are suitable for vegetarians, including the fries - which are cooked in a new non- hydrogenated blend of sunflower and rapeseed oil, and the Grilled Veggie Melt Toasted Deli Sandwich which is approved by The Vegetarian Society. In addition, McDonald's is already stocking semi-skimmed organic milk. McDonald’s is continuing to review its organic sourcing policies in line with the availability of organic products and customer demands. (May 2007) McDonald’s Fries are just like the other menu choices: made with care and attention plus quality ingredients ensures that food tastes as good as possible. The French Fries are made from three different types of potato: Russett Burbank, Shepody and Pentland Dell. These potatoes are not just grown for their flavour, but also their uniquely long shape. They’re cooked in partially hydrogenated 100 percent rapeseed oil and then lightly salted after cooking. At the beginning of the potato season the fries may be given a light coating with dextrose to help them brown properly. This is only to compensate for the low natural sugar level in young potatoes. FEBRUARY '08 UPDATE: McDonald’s UK now do not use any hydrogenated oil in any food items across the entire menu.

11. Why do you not sell vegetarian food and why did you take the quorn burgers off the menu? They were really nice and I can't eat at McDonalds any more because you've stopped selling them!
Some of the McDonald's menu items are suitable for vegetarians, including the fries - which are cooked in partially hydrogenated 100 percent rapeseed oil, the Grilled Veggie Melt Toasted Deli sandwich which is approved by The Vegetarian Society. The Veggie Deluxe is also still being sold in certain restaurants where it remains popular. The Quorn Premier was not that popular with customers at the time, and as a result it was withdrawn. There's a full list of which of McDonald’s products are vegetarian-friendly on the back of every tray liner and online at www.mcdonaldsmenu.info. FEBRUARY '08 UPDATE: McDonald’s UK now do not use any hydrogenated oil in any food items across the entire menu.

12. do your fries in the uk have beef content? will there be more vegy food coming to macdonalds?
You'll be happy to know that the answer is no! There are no animal fats of any kind added to McDonald's UK French Fries before, during or after there sourcing, preparation or cooking. McDonald's fries are made from only the best quality potatoes such as Russet Burbank, Shepody and Pentland Dell. They are cooked in non-hydrogenated oil (a blend of sunflower and rapeseed), which has been carefully developed without increasing saturated fat levels or changing the taste. McDonald’s is constantly reviewing its menu options, in particular the vegetarian items, current vegetarian options include the Veggie Deluxe, the Toasted Deli Spicy Veggie Sandwich, Garden Salad and of course the French Fries. 13. I'm vegetarian, used to love the veggieburgers. happy to see veggie deli on menu. To say it's suitable for vegetarians it can't have been fried in same oil used for meat. Veggies, religious or otherwise, are trusting you. Do you use separate fryer?
The French Fries, Veggie Deluxe, Apple Pies and Filet-o-Fish are cooked in a new non-hydrogenated oil using dedicated cooking fryers. These fryers are exclusively for the purpose of cooking a specific product and that product alone. 14. Does McDonalds have any plans to extended it range of vegi food? I really like the soya type burgers which are more chewy than the bean ones. Please make some of them for me !! thanks
Unfortunately, there are no plans to introduce a soya burger to the menu at the moment. A Quorn burger was trialled, but it didn’t prove as popular as the company would have liked and was removed from the menu. There are currently a number of other vegetarian options, including the Veggie Deluxe burger, the New Toasted Deli Spicy Veggie Sandwich, the Garden Salad, and of course the French Fries. However McDonald’s is constantly reviewing its menu and if you have any suggestions, let the Customer Service Team know online via the 'Contact Us' section at www.mcdonalds.co.uk.

15. Will the vegetable deluxe ever come back or will another form of vege-burger be available for vegetarians ? Burger King has 2 kinds (Bean Burger and VegeBurger) and the old Vege Deluxes were delicious.
McDonald's does actually offer a veggie burger. The Veggie Deluxe remains a very popular item in selected restaurants, and there are other vegetarian options such as the new Toasted Deli Spicy Veggie Sandwich. There's a list of McDonald's products that are vegetarian-friendly on the back of every tray liner. You can also visit www.mcdonalds.co.uk for more information. Just click on the 'Eat Smart' section.
