136. I sometimes eat in McDonalds in central London. The foreign staff you employ seem to lack basic english language skills. They get frustrated when I ask for my order and can't understand me and often get it wrong. Why employ staff that don't speak basic English in the capital of England?!
Sorry to hear about your frustrating experience. McDonald’s is proud to employ people from many diverse backgrounds and cultures. This shows a reflection of the types of people living in the area. Crew members that are employed in London and are originally from a foreign background are done so with the knowledge that they have a good understanding in English. 139. I've just read on this website that 16-17 year olds are paid hourly at rate of £5.00. I can tell you this is rubbish (and you know it too) because they actually get £3.85! Even 18 year olds don't get paid £5.00. I worked there for a year and at 19 years old, never got paid anymore than £4.45 and did not get any pay rises. This is so full of lies. Have you asked yourselves why no other fast food chain needs a website to 'stick up for themselves?'
This site aims to answer all questions honestly and openly. And all responses are cleared by the Legal Team before being posted to the site to ensure that they are accurate. The statement you mention regarding the pay rates says 'average hourly rate' and this varies between company owned or franchised restaurants and is influenced by factors such as length of employment and level of employment. All McDonald's employees are paid an appropriate wage, at or above the government’s minimum wage. The national minimum wage rates at September 2007 are as follows: for workers aged 22 and over, it’s £5.35 an hour; for 18-21 year olds, £4.45 an hour; and, for 16-17 year olds, £3.30 an hour. McDonald's UK rates of pay are reviewed each year in the light of external market competitiveness, internal comparability and National Minimum Wage legislation. Like many other retailers, McDonald's pays a lower starting rate to crew members aged under 18 - currently, around £4.00 per hour (above the minimum wage set by the Government). All hourly paid employees are appraised after their first three weeks, four months, six months and then annually. If they have been found to be hard working and enthusiastic staff members, then they are awarded a pay rise accordingly. If this does not represent your experience, please contact the recruitment helpline on 020 8700 7007 so that your personal circumstances can be investigated fully.

144. Do you think that paying your staff a little more might make them a little more friendly?
All McDonald's employees are paid an appropriate wage, at or above the government’s minimum wage. So for example, in company owned restaurants, the average hourly rate of pay for employees is £5.30. This rises when employees are with the company for a specific amount of time, plus there are other benefits that are offered by the company. However, none of this should directly affect the level of customer service. If you are unhappy with the customer service that you receive, please contact the Customer Services team on 08705 244622, and they will be able to investigate your issue fully.
