16. how can you justify the way that your seem to mislead children into believeing that happy meals and other childrens food at mcdonalds is healthy? and do you think that it is acceptable to advertise fast food along side the free toys that are given away, when it is obvious that children are going to be drawn to the toys?
McDonald's understands that marketing to children is a sensitive issue. The company aims to be transparent and honest in all its dealing with its customers, especially when it comes to informing parents about the nutritional content of the food that they might choose to provide to their children. All the nutritional facts are available on the reverse of trayliners in restaurant and in the 'Eat Smart' section at www.mcdonalds.co.uk, as well as on the packaging for individual menu items. It might interest you to know that the majority of the Happy Meal menu items comply with the Nutrient Profiling Model from the Food Standards Agency that works on behalf of the Government to devise a common model that clearly shows which foods are high in fat, salt and sugar. The only Happy Meal menu items that are classified as high are the cheeseburger, the milkshakes and the non-diet fizzy drinks. In terms of the advertising, the company realises that this is a sensitive area. A lot of time is spent considering the opinions of parents in order to create marketing and advertising that conveys positive messages to children about food choices, using their imaginations and taking part in physical activity. Many of McDonald's family customers view a trip to the restaurants as a treat that they choose to enjoy with their children and part of that treat is the toy and the tie-ins with their favourite characters. The Happy Meal was introduced to the UK in 1986 but we have not been able to verify its cost then. The £1.99 price point that currently stands has not changed since 1992 despite inflation of 47 per cent. You might also be interested in knowing that the first Happy Meal arrived in the US in 1979 and consisted of a hamburger or cheeseburger, a small soft drink, small Fries, a portion of cookies and a selection of toys, stencils and puzzle books all for the princely sum of $1. 21. when on holiday in France the children's happy meals included a healthy pudding, either yoghurt drink or fruit puree at the same cost of a UK happy meal, why don't McD's in the UK do this?
Each country develops menu items and promotions appropriate to their locality. Where a promotion has been successful elsewhere, it may well be taken on board in the UK. An example of this is the salad range, which was initially launched in Australia and the US. Currently, you can swap the French Fries in the Happy Meal for a Fruit Bag or Carrot Sticks.
