2. i am doing a science experement for school and i want to know what french fries are made of,and i want to know why you put glucose in your fries as you said in a previous Q&A?
McDonald’s do not put glucose in the fries. However, the French Fries are lightly coated with dextrose, a natural wheat-based sugar, to help them brown. This takes place over a very short period at the beginning of the potato season when young potatoes do not have enough natural sugars of their own to brown properly. Within the UK McDonald’s uses Russett Burbank, Shepody and Pentland Dell, because they can readily grow in the British climate and because they also provide consistently long fries. If you would like any more ingredient or nutritional information about McDonald's food, you can find it in the 'Eat Smart' section of www.mcdonalds.co.uk, or on the reverse of the tray liners in restaurants. 3. I READ ABOVE THAT THE DEXTROSE YOU COAT YOUR FRIES IN IS CORN BASED. I NOTICE THAT DEPENDING ON WHICH BRANCH I VISIT I END UP WITH A HEADACHE DUE TO CORN ALLERGY. IS IT POSSIBLE TO KNOW FOR SURE WHEN THEY DO AND DONT USE DEXTROSE AS I LOVE YOUR FRIES.
Some of the potatoes used to make McDonald’s French Fries have low levels of naturally occurring sugars present, and may require the addition of maize-derived dextrose. This helps to give the fries their characteristic golden colour. Dextrose may be added between July and January, but only if it is needed, and the levels used will be very low. (April 2008)

4. as we now live in a generation where we are advised more and more about our health. why is it that mcdonalds advertise healthy options when the amount of salt on their fries must be well over the recommended amount. i vote for to have the option of salted or un-salted
It is true that McDonald's French Fries are prepared with a light sprinkle of salt once they are cooked, but you may be interested to know that McDonald’s fries have had their salt content reduced by 24 per cent in response to customer feedback on salt levels. Also remember that you have the option of ordering fries without salt. Just make the crew member serving aware that you prefer your fries unsalted and they will see that they are prepared accordingly. (July 2008)

5. Is this article correct: French fries are fried slightly in animal fat then frozen and shipped to all the McDonald's stores for the final frying , what they do is they cut the potatoes into slices and then coat them with a thin layer of lard (pig fat) or cow fat so that when it is fried it will crunch. Then these fries are shipped to McDonald's stores in different parts of the world.
The article that you are referring to is incorrect. The French Fries are made from Russet Burbank, Shepody and Pentland Dell potatoes that are sourced in the UK for their superior taste and unique shape. They are sliced into their recognisable shape, and at the beginning of the potato season a light coating of dextrose is added to help them brown properly. They are then frozen to seal in the freshness and sent to McDonald's UK restaurants. Once they are at the restaurant, the fries are then freshly prepared as and when needed. They are cooked for approximately three minutes and then lightly salted by hand and served. (October 2007)

8. Is it true that the potatoes used in the frys have the natural flavour removed so that a more addictive item may take its place, with a better smell and taste.
Not true, the majority of McDonald’s French Fries are made by McCain’s. Russet Burbank, Pentland Dell and Shepody potatoes are used for their quality, taste and long shape when cut. The fries are cooked in dedicated frying vats in a new non-hydrogenated blend of sunflower and rapeseed oil which is suitable for vegetarians. The new oil has been developed without raising the saturated fat content or altering the taste. There are no animal fats or lards added of any kind, all that is added is a pinch of salt after cooking for taste. (May 2008)

9. How come your chips do not decomposs properly inside the gut? They can stay in a jar for months and never get any mould on them, they never brake down, what are those awful things doing to a person's stomach? Also, how many cows do you kill in one year?
McDonald's apologises for the slow reply, there were some technical problems which caused your question to slip through. McDonald’s French Fries are made from potatoes and as such will deteriorate at the same rate as other potato products. McDonald’s French Fries are made only from the finest Russett Burbank, Shepody and Pentland Dell potatoes because of their long shape, and are supplied by UK growers. It's difficult to give an absolute precise number, but to give a rough estimate, McDonald's UK use approximately 33,000 tonnes of beef a year – that's roughly 90kg of boneless meat per animal, equating to just under 367,000 head of cattle a year. 10. is it true that ur fries are pre-cooked? and if so are they cooked in pure vegeterian oil please?
Firstly, many apologies for the very slow response to your question, as the site went through a few changes, some questions had slipped through the net, so thank you for your patience. Regarding the French fries it is true, and a similar process to other fries that you may buy from a supermarket. McDonald's UK uses a vegetable oil blend made of sunflower and rapeseed. This is non-hydrogenated, and GM free. You may also be interested to know that McDonald's French Fries are now fully accredited by the Vegetarian Society.

11. hi, I ask AGAIN , the same question about ur fries being given after BEEF or animal fats added to it...I have seen you replied that NO,it 100% vegetarian in UK. I notice one thing in ur response, that you say 'NOW! in every answer, which means previously u have been doing that!..I want an answer coz iam a vegetarian and I have heard many rumours abt ur food..clarify,every one needs an answer!
You can rest assured that there are no animal fats of any kind in McDonald's UK French Fries. The 'Now' part is referring to the new vegetable oil that McDonald's UK now use as opposed to the vegetable oil that was used previously. The new oil has been developed without raising the saturated fat content or altering the taste, which research has shown is important to customers. The trans fatty acid content of the new cooking oil is less than two per cent. You may be interested to know that McDonald's French Fries are now officially accredited by the Vegetarian Society.

13. I used to love McDonald's fries but the last 3 times I've been they were cold and they're not salty enough any more. Should they be hot or are they served lukewarm?
McDonald's is disappointed to hear about your recent experiences at its restaurants and would like to apologise. McDonald's sets itself very high standards that it expects to maintain at all times. The famous French fries should always reach you hot and fresh every time. If you find that this is not the case please bring it to the attention of the restaurant manager who will prepare you another portion. McDonald's fries are salted by hand once they have been cooked. Although the company has reduced the amount of salt, they should have the right amount needed for enjoyment. Again if you are unhappy just let a crew member know or the restaurant manger and they will see to it that you receive a fresh portion. Here’s hoping that McDonald's sees you back in the restaurant in the near future. (March 2008)

14. I can not eat McD's chips anymore as they are too salty. I have asked for no salt and been told that thats the way they are made. My husband wants to know why he should bother going large on chips when all you get is a bigger box. Carrickfergus - the salt capital of McDonalds.
Firstly apologies for the slow response to your question, there have been some recent technical updates to the site, which resulted in a delay in answering questions. However the team are now back on track. OK, in regards to your question, McDonald's apologises for any disappointment you experienced with its French fries. Although the fries are prepared with a light sprinkle of salt once they are cooked, there should be no reason why that you cannot have a fresh portion made for you unsalted. If you are told by the crew member serving you otherwise, please speak to the restaurant manager who will see to it that a fresh portion is prepared for you. As you have mentioned, the large fries do come in a carton that is bigger than the medium fries and the bag of the smaller fries, therefore resulting in more. Again, if you are unhappy with your food, just consult the restaurant manager who will find a solution for any problems. (March 2008)

15. It it true that you fried your fries in India in vegetable oil, but with additives that contained beef extract (a country noted for having many Hindus, a race to which cows are sacred and many castes are vegetarian). Is it the same stuff you fry them in in the UK?
Thank you for your question and sorry for our slow response - unfortunately your question seems to have slipped through the records, but the team are hard at work trying to answer all the questions. McDonald’s UK does not prepare its French Fries with any beef tallow. The French Fries are made from the finest potatoes and then cooked using new non-hydrogenated cooking oil, substantially reducing the levels of Trans Fatty Acids. As of late 2007, they are certified by the Vegetarian Society. Regarding the issues in India, it is difficult to give you an answer as this site is operated by McDonald’s UK and primarily deals with issues in the UK. Please visit www.mcdonalds.com for more information regarding McDonald's restaurants and around the globe. Alternatively, you can go visit the McDonald's India site at www.mcdonaldsindia.com.
