47. Hi, i was looking at the question about delivery, and you said it cannot be done; you have McDonald’s delivery in Singapore so why can’t you do delivery in the uk. I used to work for McDonalds! I wanted to be on the tills but i was in the kitchen and asked the manager if I could do tills but I’d have to wait another month, so i quit! If the store has jobs, could I apply and if i do would I be allowed to work there again after quitting last year?
Thank you for your question. However, this website has been set up to deal with questions regarding McDonald's in the UK and therefore cannot comment on restaurant operations in other countries. However, with regards to McDonald’s in the UK many factors have to be taken into account to provide a delivery service, for example the length of time taken for the staff to reach their destinations to ensure hot fresh food in the quickest time. As a company McDonald's UK feels that it could not adequately meet these goals at the present time. As an ex employee you are able to apply for a job at McDonald's, however you must declare the fact you have previously been employed by McDonald’s on your application form.

48. I was working for Mc for three years, went through all the courses (customer care, first aid, FRS and BSM), how will the other employers recognise, and that these are on level of GSCE??? Do I need a new certificate?
Thank you for your question. The GCSE’s, which McDonald’s offers are in Maths and English and can be completed online through www.ourlounge.co.uk - you can complete these even if you have done other management courses.

49. I work at McDonalds and am not happy as for the last couple of weeks i have been put on a 7 or 8 hour shift and i get told to go on my break having only been their an hour, is this legal? I heard u need to have a break every four hour: S
Thank you for your question. There are no set times that an employee should have their breaks, other than the amount of time they should spend on their break – for a 7 or 8 hour shift this is 45 minutes. However, managers should try to plan breaks to ensure that they are not taken at the start or end of an employees shift.

51. Why do you continue to sell Coca Cola when the Company is openly using children in the sugar fields of Columbia? Why have a site like this when you know that you will never admit anything that will mark you as a bad employer? Finally, why don't you employ people with qualifications in the first place? How do not feel you are making a mockery of the education system by offering people McGCSEs and the like. 90% of the world has worked out this is a PR exercise. The other 10% work for you!
Thank you for your question. McDonald’s has been supplied by Coca Cola on and off since 1974, however they have continuously supplied McDonald's since 1993. There are currently no plans to change this situation. The aim of this website is to give everyone the chance to ask McDonald's a question about any concerns or issues that they might have. All of the questions you can see have been sent in by McDonald's customers or members of the general public, who have visited the website, just like yourself. McDonald's and the Make Up Your Own Mind Team work very hard to read every question posted and are committed to answering all relevant questions with honesty and clarity. Anybody with the right attitude and commitment to providing the best in customer service is welcome to apply for a position at McDonald’s. The company employs people based on whether they have the ability to do the job asked of them. There is absolutely no discrimination towards individuals. However, a basic education and knowledge in areas such as Mathematics and English are extremely beneficial for an employee to enrich themselves fully during their employment. As you are clearly aware, McDonald’s have recently attained Awarding Body Status; this means that the company can develop and award qualifications monitored by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA). McDonald’s are hoping that this will make a significant difference to the lives of staff that did not obtain these qualifications whilst in the education system. It is initiatives such as these which have led McDonalds to be featured in 'The Times top 100 Graduate Employers' list for the last eight years, and winning the 'FT Best Workplaces UK' award.

52. What qualification do a manager, supervisor and employee need in McDonald’s? Please help me for my business coursework Unit 2. Many thanks
Thank you for your question. Anybody with the right attitude and commitment to providing the best in customer service is welcome to apply for a position at McDonald’s. The company employs people based on whether they have the ability to do the job asked of them. The majority of people that start employment begin as Crew Members, while some start as Customer Care Assistants. For such roles a basic education and knowledge in areas such Mathematics and English are extremely beneficial for an employee to enrich themselves fully during their employment. For employees who wish to enter the salaried management programmes, they would need either a degree, or relevant, extensive work experience. However, they can also progress internally without necessarily having any external qualifications. McDonald's realises that academic studies are not for every one, so it provides many training opportunities and avenues to progress. The company spends £30 million a year on training for its employees. In addition, McDonalds has recently introduced GCSE level qualifications in English and Mathematics free of charge for all of our employees via on-line learning. 53. A study by the Joseph Rowntree foundation in July 2008 found that anyone earning the minimum wage is living in poverty. Does McDonalds agree with this study?
Thank you for your question. The company remunerates its staff fairly based on their age, hours, experience and location and also offers additional benefits such as meal allowances, private health care, Life Assurance and a pension. This pay structure is also in line with (and often exceeds) Government legislation. Some employees do receive minimum wage but this will be based on their individual circumstances and it's worth noting that all employees have the opportunity to benefit from three pay increases in their first year of employment and, thereafter, annually. All members of staff are also eligible for a bonus should they reach certain professional targets agreed with their line manager at the start of the year and the company meets it overall business objectives. The company was recently recognised by the FT as one of the top 50 employers in the UK, which would seem to suggest that it treats its staff fairly and respects the job that they do on behalf of the company and its customers. 54. I see that the Oxford English Dictionary defines a 'McJob' as 'a un stimulating, low-paid job with few prospects, esp. one created by the expansion of the service sector'. Does McDonalds agree that the 1 in 6 of its workers on minimum wage are 'low paid'? If McDonalds doesn't agree, how could these workers’s pay get any lower?
Some people's perception of what it is to have a job with McDonald's is far behind that of what is the reality. With regards to the ‘McJob’ definition McDonald's feel that the definition is out of touch, and somewhat insulting to the talent, hard work and efforts McDonald's staff use every day while serving the public. Jobs in the service sector provide employment for some two million people in the UK who make a valuable contribution to the economy and McDonald's staff play a part in this, and this is something that the company recognises. A job with McDonald's is a valuable first step for young people into the workplace. A 'McJob' can provide real opportunities: 80 per cent of McDonald's restaurant management started out as hourly paid crew members and one in five franchisees started as crew. Other benefits for hourly staff include a free meal allowance, paid holiday (four weeks per annum), free life assurance, private health care (after qualifying period), an employee discount card and a length of service award scheme. Such benefits have led to McDonalds being featured in 'The Times top 100 Graduate Employers' list for the last eight years, and winning the 'FT Best Workplaces UK' award. Currently less than 17 percent of hourly paid employees are on national minimum wage, with all McDonald's UK rates of pay getting reviewed each year in the light of external market competitiveness, internal comparability and National Minimum Wage legislation. 55. Dear McDonalds,I heard that you pay about 1 in 6 of your workers the absolute lowest possible salary under English law (i.e. minimum wage). Is this correct?
Thank you for your question. Currently less than 17 percent of hourly paid employees are on national minimum wage. All hourly paid employees are appraised after their first three weeks, four months, six months and then annually. If they have been found to be hard working and enthusiastic staff members, then they are awarded a pay rise accordingly. All McDonald's UK rates of pay are reviewed each year in light of external market competitiveness, internal comparability and National Minimum Wage legislation. McDonald’s has also featured in the 'The Times top 100 Graduate Employers' list for the last eight years, and recently won the 'FT Best Workplaces UK' award. The company is immensely proud of the commitment and effort its staff contributes every day to great food and great customer service. (Jan 2009)

56. Are shift managers and business managers allowed to shout/swear at staff members’ kitchen crew in particular? Because I experience this almost daily, not always directly too me but too everyone working to speed up the service apparently? Thanks.
Thank you for your question. McDonald's is very sorry to hear about your disappointing experience at one of its restaurants. McDonald’s staff are crucial to the business and are its most important asset. Restaurant managers are trained how to treat their employees and how to discipline them effectively if needed. Please feel free to call the Customer Services Team on 08705 244 622 or you can email by using the 'Contact Us' link on www.mcdonalds.co.uk, and the team can investigate your matter. (Jan 09)

57. Hi, my questions are for my business studies coursework. 1. Are pay packets produced via computer or manually? 2. How do you know which employees have worked how many hours? 3. How do restaurants promote health and safety to employees? 4. How are people selected to be trained, how often can they be trained and are there any limits? Thank you, this would be a great help to me.
Thank you for your question. All McDonald's restaurant staff are trained in health and safety procedures. This includes a teaching session and test before they start, followed by on-the-job training and regular checks on their skills and knowledge. In addition a very important part of our department’s remit is working with restaurant employees to give them the tools and resources they need to deal with complaints effectively. Training starts as part of their Basic Shift Management course. We suggest you download one of McDonald’s Student Information Packs. These have been developed after receiving many questions from students wanting to know more about the company and are designed to help address the type of questions that you may ask about the company operations. 58. In a level 1 store what would be the promotion level from a crew member and is customer care assistant higher than a crew member in a level 1 store?
Thank you for your question. We're not sure what you mean by Level 1 store? However we can confirm that in all our restaurants the promotion path for a Crew member would be to either Crew Trainer or Customer Care Assistant. For more information, we suggest you download our Recruitment and Training information pack. This can be done by visiting our website www.mcdonalds.co.uk and going to the 'Schools & Students' section which can be found under 'About us'.

59. Hello, can I ask if is there any possibility that, at a restaurant's discretion, be accepted a self - employed as cleaner and later as manager in same position of self? Thank you!
McDonald’s employees have different responsibilities depending on their position, however, all staff are trained in the importance of hygiene and cleanliness, and this continues throughout their employment with McDonald’s. All crew members follow strict procedures to ensure that the restaurant is kept a clean and hygienic environment, operating a 'clean-as-you-go' system, by which floors and surfaces are cleaned throughout the day as required. As a result McDonald’s do not hire external cleaners, as this is primarily the crew’s responsibility. With regards to Managers, they have a much greater breadth of responsibilities compared to the crew members. Trainee Business Managers follow an intensive 18-week Management Development Programme, providing commercial management training in its fullest sense, designed to provide the talents needed for a long-term management careers. As well as thorough grounding in the operational side of the business, trainee managers also receive a whole raft of commercial skills in areas including finance, marketing, leadership and HR. However this is not the only route to becoming a Manager, as 80 percent of McDonald’s restaurant management staff started out as hourly crew members whilst one in five franchisees started as crew. If you are interested in applying for a position with McDonald’s please go to the ‘Careers’ section of www.mcdonalds.co.uk. (August 2008)

60. Hi there i was wondering if you could answer my question i currently work for the company and i have for 3 months but recently our customer care manager has left and all of the customer care staff have recently started (3 months or less) i was wondering what will happen now will the restarunt bring someone new in to run the dining area or will they choose someone who is there and if so what criteria will they go off e.g age of candidates/legnth of time with company ect
A Customer Care Manager is responsible for the customer service provided in the dining area and for the team of people who work in this area. They are responsible for cleanliness, hospitality and customer interaction in the customer areas. However, in the absence of someone operating in this position, the manager will step in to fill the void left, or find a suitable replacement amongst the established crew members. In the mean time the restaurant will look for an appropriate replacement. The age of the candidate is irrelevant. The criteria is based on the amount of experience that they have from their previous position. McDonald’s employ their staff based on the ability to do the tasks asked of them, so it is difficult to estimate how long it would take to find the right candidate. However to ensure the restaurant is operating smoothly and that everything is running to a high standard, the sooner the position is filled, the better. (August 2008)
