79. I would like to know if it is possible to recieve or obtain more detailed feedback from a unsucessful job application? The reason I am asking this is because I have been unsucessful on 4 previous job applications and I would really appreciate it if the company would give more detailed feedback explaining why i was unsucessful. I would prefer this as it has negatively affected my confidence.
Thank you for your question. Please contact the HR Helpline on 0870 600 5120 who will be able to help you with your enquiry. (March 09)

81. What is your piercing policy?
Firstly apologies for the delay in answering your question, the team has been very busy with all the questions that are pouring in and everybody is working hard to answer them all. McDonald’s staff policy regarding jewellery is that no watches, small badges or other jewellery items of any sort, with the exception of a plain wedding band, are to be worn during work. This is due to the risk of it being caught in equipment, dirt being trapped within the item, food safety risk, or a cause of physical contamination. This includes visible body piercing such as tongue, eyebrows and nose. Make-up is permitted as long as it is subtle and not excessive. (July 2008)

82. Would any of the suits in head office give up their excessive salary and 9-5 to work the extended opening hours for minimum wage + the derisory 50p premium rate? Recieving the abuse and sleep problems your foolish ideas subject the crew to?
Firstly apologies for the delay in answering your question, the team has been very busy with all the questions that are pouring in and everybody is working hard to answer them all. McDonald’s does not agree that its staff are subject to abuse. A career at McDonald's is one that is rich in challenges, stimulation and rewards. All McDonald's UK rates of pay are reviewed each year in the light of external market competitiveness, internal comparability and National Minimum Wage legislation. Like many other retailers, McDonald's pays a lower starting rate to crew members aged under 18. For 16 - 17 year olds working in McDonald's company owned restaurants, employees start on £4.25. 18 - 21 year olds in company owned restaurants start on £4.65 and 22 years and above start on £5.55. The pay rates may vary in franchised restaurants. Other benefits in place for hourly paid staff, including a free meal allowance, four weeks paid holiday per annum, free life assurance, private health care (after a qualifying period), an employee discount card and a length of service awards scheme. It is true that McDonald’s does operate a shift pattern that incorporates evening and night hours, however this allows the company to run a flexible shift policy, designed to allow staff to meet their own needs. Hourly paid staff are able to choose when they want to work, and to change their schedules weekly to fit in with other commitments such as child care or studies. (Jan 09)

84. Im doing an assignment based on McDonald's and motivation. I have worked at McDonald's and personally loved it and was very motivated there. But i need to ow if McDonald's does any research on how motivated their staff are and if so what the results were? Also are staff events regualar in all restaurants? Thanks X
Firstly apologies for the delay in answering your question, the team has been very busy with all the questions that are pouring in and everybody is working hard to answer them all. McDonald's carries out an annual survey for all employees, addressing their satisfaction levels and any areas where they feel that improvement and progress can be made. This data is for internal use only and the company hopes that you will understand that in the interests of privacy cannot be revealed on this site. With regard to your final inquiry, restaurants have the freedom to plan crew events as they wish, but the expectation from the company is a minimum of two a year. (Dec 2008)

85. What restaurant or canteen facilities do you provide for McDonald's staff at HQ and other bases? Do you use staff canteens to test new recipes? Do you encourage staff to eat elsewhere and not eat McDonald's every day?
Firstly apologies for the delay in answering your question, the team has been very busy with all the questions that are pouring in and everybody is working hard to answer them all. All McDonald's employees are entitled to a meal allowance for each shift that they work. The Head Office staff restaurant is often used to trial and test new menu items. Of course, employees can choose to eat elsewhere should they wish. However, if they decide to eat on site the menu offers enough options for employees to enjoy variety each day. (Nov 2008)

86. My partner currently works as an paid by the hour manager/shift runner. She has been told by the store first assistant that as she is in this position she is only allowed 20 mins lunch break whereas the crew are allowed 30 mins. I understand under the Working Time Directive you only need a 20 minute break but as I have no access to the crew handbook please could you confirm what the policy is or can individual stores set their own.
All employees are entitled to a 20 minute break per shift - as per the Working Time Directive. However most hourly paid employees are given a 45 minute unpaid break each shift. There may be times when shift managers cannot take a full break allowance due to them being in charge of the restaurant, but you should discuss this matter with the Business Manager if you feel that you need to have a longer break period. 90. whats the role of a customer care and how different is it from a crew member?
Thanks for your interest in McDonald’s. Generally speaking a Crew Member has a great deal of variety and scope in their role, with three main areas of responsibility – Customer Service, food preparation, and cleanliness and hygiene. The daily duties of a Crew Member will revolve around all these charges. In comparison, a Customer Care Assistant acts as the face of the restaurant, ensuring that the customers are always made to feel both happy and welcome during their visit. The ability to communicate positively with customers is essential for this role. For a more thorough breakdown of what these roles involve, please go to www.mcdonalds.co.uk and visit the ‘Careers’ section. Here you can find in depth descriptions about the Company and roles, as well as search for vacancies in your area and apply online. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to get in contact the Central Recruitment Team on 0208 700 7007. (September 2008)
