- 1. Hi i just wanted to know if your french fries are halal/vegetarian? Also i have read that your fish is not halal as it's not blessed by an imam, as far as i'm concerned the fish does not need to be blessed by an imam to be suitable, this applies only to the meat and chicken. Are your fish finger happy meals suitable for vegetarians?
-
Thanks for your question. None of McDonald's products carry Halal certification. McDonald’s French Fries are suitable for vegetarians and have been approved by the Vegetarian Society. All of our products are cooked separately; beef patties are cooked on a griddle and our File-o-Fish, Apple Pies, Chicken products and vegetable patty are cooked in 100% vegetable oil using dedicated cooking vats. These vats are exclusively for the purpose of cooking a specific product and that product alone. However, due to the design of the oil filtration system there is a small chance the 100% vegetable oil used to cook each product can become in contact with oil used to cook meat products during the oil filtering process. McDonald’s can assure you that whilst every possible precaution is taken in order to prevent cross contamination during this filtering process, we cannot guarantee this will not occur. The French Fries are cooked using different equipment and are entirely segregated from the other products; therefore this product is not affected. (February 2011)

Is this correct in respect of it vegi meals, chips and fillet of fish as if these products do not include any other animal based based ingrediants then they should be considered Halal. please note: -Under islmic law fish and fish realted ingrediants are considered hallal as they are water based animals. Haje

Thanks for your question. None of our food is certified as Halal. Our Fries are certified as Vegetarian. Our Filet-o-Fish and Spicy Veggie Patty are both cooked separately from meat items. However, due to the design of the oil filtration system there is a small chance the oil used to cook these patties can become in contact with oil used to cook meat products during the oil filtering process. We therefore cannot guarantee cross-contamination will not occur. (January 2011)

What are these? Delicious Digg Reddit Facebook StumbleUpon - 3. It is encouraging to see that McDonalds has trialed halaal food in Southall. Unfortunately you have decided not to roll this out due to the small number of people it involves and infrastructure changes required to your restaurant. Have you considered a trial in a more appropriate area with a high density of muslim population such as bradford or parts of birmingham? I am sure that it would be a resounding success as the demand for such products in these areas would be very high.
-
Thanks for your question. You are correct in saying that McDonald’s ran a trail of Halal certified food in one of our restaurants and found that Halal certified food is only popular with a very small percentage of our customers. We appreciate your suggestion for a trial in an alternative area but in order to offer Halal food we would need to make significant changes to our kitchen procedures and supply chain. Given this, we have decided that we are not currently in a position to roll out Halal food in the UK. (January 2011)

What are these? Delicious Digg Reddit Facebook StumbleUpon - 5. I just saw the images and article of the introduction of halal burgers and meals in your Southall restaurant. As a vegetarian I was shocked to see a picture of a sign saying that the equipment for the vegetable deluxe can be stored with that of the chicken and fish products, this therefore makes the burger non-vegetarian. My questions are therefore; why are you alientating your vegetarian customers? and, what are you doing to make them aware that they are no longer welcome at McDonalds?
-
McDonald's apologises for any confusion caused, but wanted to make you aware that the sign states that 'Only Halal meat and Halal vegetarian equipment should be stored here.' This is purely equipment stored away from other equipment to prevent cross-contamination. The Halal equipment storage rack then divides into different sections: chicken, fish and vegetarian. Rest assured that the vegetarian equipment is always kept separate. In regard to your other point, McDonald's is in no way alienating its vegetarian customers. All vegetarians are most welcome in McDonald's restaurants. The Veggie Deluxe available in selected restaurants, and don't forget the French Fries are suitable for vegetarians. If your sweet tooth needs reminding, all the Milkshakes are suitable for vegetarians, as well as the McFlurries, excluding the Smarties variety. (September 2007)
SEPTEMBER '09 TRIAL RESULT: McDonald’s began this trial because we wanted to assess customer demand for certified Halal food in our UK restaurants. We have learnt that Halal is only popular with a very small percentage of our customers and to offer it we would need to make significant changes to our kitchen procedures and supply chain. Given this, we have decided that we are not currently in a position to roll out Halal food in the UK.

Thank you for your question. The issue of Halal food items on the McDonald's menu is a complex one, with both sides of the debate raising passionate and important issues. It goes without saying that customers are very important to the company, and McDonald's works hard to accommodate them all as best as it possibly can.
Following numerous requests for Halal products to be available on the menu, McDonald's ran a trial in the Southall, London. The purpose of the trial was to assess customer demand for certified Halal food in our UK restaurants. We have learnt that Halal is only popular with a very small percentage of our customers and to offer it we would need to make significant changes to our kitchen procedures and supply chain. What are these? Delicious Digg Reddit Facebook StumbleUpon - 8. Could you tell me whether you still serve bacon in your Halal store in Southall (and keep it separate from the Halal chicken)? What is the status of the trial? Many thanks.
-
Thank you for your question. McDonald's did complete a trial of Halal food in the Southall restaurant; however this trial has now been completed.
McDonald’s began the trial because we wanted to assess customer demand for certified Halal food in our UK restaurants. As a result, we have learnt that Halal is only popular with a very small percentage of our customers and to offer it we would need to make significant changes to our kitchen procedures and supply chain. Given this, we have decided that we are not currently in a position to roll out Halal food in the UK.
To answer your question however, in order to ensure we met the expectations of the Muslim community, we worked closely with the Halal Food Authority. The HFA worked with McDonald's and accredited the systems and procedures McDonalds have put in place to ensure that the Halal food could be prepared and served to customers and meet high expectations. The only items that were available on the Halal menu in the Southall restaurant were chicken-based foods, and they were clearly marked. They were prepared using independent fryers and utensils to the other food so as to prevent cross contamination. The rest of the products were prepared in the usual way and can also clearly be identified.

Does the increased profit at the Southall branch correlate with the amount of people on here demanding McDonalds use Halal meat or do you just have 1 extra customer who has several hundred email accounts? This is part of school course work so please reply

What are these? Delicious Digg Reddit Facebook StumbleUpon - 10. how are the animals sacrificed (not if they apply to EU regulations) but as in how?? someone personally stuns them? or are they placed on a production line or are they slaughtered by knife? in ISLAM it states that muslims are allowed to eat the food of the christians and jews (ch 5 v 5 qur'aan). seen as UK is seen as a christian country (church of england) if the slaughter method is approved then it is lawful (halal) without needing to have 'halal' supply

Thank you for your question. The issue of Halal food items on the McDonald's menu is a complex one, with both sides of the debate raising passionate and important issues. McDonald's researched this need and after careful consideration and lengthy discussions with Halal food experts, commenced a one restaurant trial in Southall, London to provide these customers with a small selection of Halal food items. To ensure we met all stakeholder expectations, McDonald’s consulted widely with respected groups such as the RSPCA, Humane Slaughter Association, Compassion In World Farming and the Halal Food Authority.
In developing the slaughter programme, we worked closely with the Halal Food Authority, who verified our approach right through the supply chain. The Halal slaughter method did not change much from the usual procedure. This is the stun to stun method (an electrical shock is used to knock out the chicken painlessly so that it is unconscious), followed by the kill. During the Halal method a verse from the Koran is recited during slaughter. This is the only change in the traditional abattoir procedure, for which McDonald’s has standards in place that are continually monitored to ensure that the slaughter of animals is carried out in a humane and compassionate manner by qualified personnel and under veterinary supervision. The company will not work with any supplier who does not adhere to high standards, and those required by UK and EU legislation.
The trial in the Southall restaurant is now complete. The purpose of the trial was to assess customer demand for certified Halal food in our UK restaurants. We have learnt that Halal is only popular with a very small percentage of our customers and to offer it we would need to make significant changes to our kitchen procedures and supply chain. Given this, we have decided that we are not currently in a position to roll out Halal food in the UK.

Thank you for your questions. Halal products are no longer available as the trial at the Southall restaurant is now complete. The products were available for a limited time only and the purpose of the trial was to assess customer demand for certified Halal food in our UK restaurants. Given this, we have decided that we are not currently in a position to roll out Halal food in the UK.
To answer your questions however, during the trial McDonald's worked closely with the Halal Food Authority and leading Animal Welfare charities. McDonald's Halal slaughter method has not changed much from its usual procedure. This is the stun to stun method (an electrical shock is used to knock out the chicken painlessly so that it is unconscious), followed by the kill. During the Halal method for accreditation, a verse from the Koran is recited during the slaughter by an appropriate person. This is the only change in the abattoir procedure.

What are these? Delicious Digg Reddit Facebook StumbleUpon - 12. is mcdonalds fries and burgers halal? what is put in them how are they cooked?

Thank you for your question. McDonald's recently ran a trial in the Southall restuarant in London whereby select Halal products were available for purchase. The purpose of the trial was to assess customer demand for certified Halal food in our UK restaurants. As a result of the trial, we have learnt that Halal is only popular with a very small percentage of our customers and to offer it we would need to make significant changes to our kitchen procedures and supply chain. At the moment, McDonald's UK lacks the necessary infrastructure throughout its supply chain to guarantee the requirements of Halal while ensuring the company retains its high standards of welfare, ingredient quality, etc. Given this, we have decided that we are not currently in a position to roll out Halal food in the UK.
In regards to the products mentioned in your questions, the beef burgers are made from 100 percent beef made from whole cuts of forequarter and flank (similar to the mince you'd buy in the supermarket). It’s that simple, no hooves, eyes, genitals or organs, just the whole cuts of forequarter and flank. Meanwhile, the French Fries are made by McCain’s. Russet Burbank, Pentland Dell and Shepody potatoes are used for their quality, taste and long shape when cut. The fries are cooked in dedicated frying vats in a new non-hydrogenated blend of sunflower and rapeseed oil which is suitable for vegetarians. You can find extensive information regarding all of McDonald's menu in the 'Food' section of www.mcdonalds.co.uk and at www.mcdonaldsmenu.info.

In regards to the Filet-o-Fish, McDonald’s considers it a personal choice as to whether a vegetarian eats fish or not. The Filet-o-Fish is cooked in vegetable oil and apart from the fish itself, it does not contain any other animal flesh or by-product. Meanwhile, the burgers that contain beef and chicken are not suitable for vegetarians. Finally, in answer to your question regarding French Fries, they are cooked using a non-hydrogenated cooking oil made from sunflower and rapeseed. As a result they are suitable for vegetarians and are also officially accredited by the Vegetarian Society.
