1. Why are you feeding people these lies? Stop feeding people these lies and come clean. You are murderers. Slaughterers. All you care about is profit. As long as you can put everyone in a box and convince that you are doing whats right, you are happy. You want people to believe that you are good company, so more people will buy your products. Admit you are wrong, admit you a murderer, and stop ruining this planet. Globalisation is ruining this world, and it must be stopped. You must be stopped.
McDonald's is not feeding lies to anybody because it has nothing to hide, and that is the key reason Make Up Your Own Mind was created. There are a lot of myths and misinformation floating around about McDonald's. In an effort to correct this situation and to reassure customers and the general public, Make Up Your Own Mind allows anybody to ask a question about anything to do with the company and its business, and McDonald's and the MUYOM team answer all relevant questions honestly, as quickly as possible. There is no selling going on here, just the facts. Due to the nature of McDonald's business, slaughter is a necessary process in the production of meat for consumption. However, that shouldn't suggest that McDonald's does not care about animals' lives and welfare prior to slaughter. McDonald’s has strict animal welfare standards developed with suppliers and global experts to ensure that it has the best procedures throughout its supply chain, and will not work with any supplier that does not adhere to these very high and exacting standards. Regarding its presence across the world, McDonald’s is fully aware of its social responsibilities. Topical bullets like the environment and obesity are often shot at McDonald’s, and being the recognised leader in its field this is to be expected. However in these areas, McDonald’s is actively working hard to improve. McDonald's takes its environmental responsibilities very seriously and is committed to implementing changes to the way it conducts its business that will have tangible positive impact, rather than chasing headlines. A quarter of all its waste through its restaurants is recycled. By the end of 2008, the company's entire UK delivery fleet will be running on biodiesel made from recycled cooking oil combined with a limited amount of rapeseed oil. Regarding public concerns surrounding obesity and diet, there have been major reductions in Trans Fats. McDonald's have reduced to level of Trans Fats from 30 per cent down to the lowest possible levels. Nuggets have had their salt reduced by 30 per cent, fries 24 per cent, buns 20 per cent and mayonnaise by 75 per cent. There have also been changes to the menu. Toasted Deli Sandwiches, Salads, Carrot Sticks, Fruit Bags, bottled Vittel Still Mineral Water, Tropicana Orange Juice and semi skimmed Organic Milk, plus there is nutritional information available in restaurants on the reverse of tray liners and comprehensively online at www.mcdonaldsmenu.info. The company is very proud of all its achievements. As the public changes, so does McDonald’s, and this adaptable and progressive quality is something that McDonald’s strives to continue. We hope these facts might make you reconsider your perspective and look beyond the headlines. (December 2007)

2. what influence does the EU have on the McDonlad's franchise
The European Union will influence McDonald's in the same way as other businesses, through the development of new and changing legislation. Many laws and regulations that are relevant to McDonald's originate from the EU, such as some laws relating to employment, health and safety and the environment.

3. Hello, I just want to know if you managed to have the Mc job definition changed in the Oxford dictionnary? Thank you for your quick answer
Thanks for your question. There still hasn't been any change. This sort of thing usually takes a while to be fully sorted out and for all parties to be happy. However, the company is still in touch with the Oxford English Dictionary, and will keep everyone updated with any news. (March 2008)

4. If you didn't have a problem with the documentary ''supersize me'' - as you say in many of your answers, why did Mcdonald's try to block its distribution?
McDonald’s apologises for the delay in answering your question. As the site went through some technical updates and changes, some of the questions slipped through. However, everything is functioning better and your question has now been answered – Thank you for you patience. McDonald's UK did not try to block distribution of the documentary film 'Supersize Me.' Indeed, at the time of its release, McDonald's engaged with consumers regarding the issues raised in the film. This in turn was one of many reasons for the setting up of Make Up Your Own Mind: to discuss issues such as those raised in the film and to respond to questions from the public concerning diet and lifestyle.

5. Why was you food allowed to get so bad before all of this publicity?
McDonald’s apologises for the delay in answering your question. As the site went through some technical updates and changes, some of the questions slipped through. However, everything is functioning better and your question has now been answered – Thank you for you patience. McDonald's doesn't believe that its food ever 'got so bad'. McDonald's works hard to provide its customers with the best food that it can source and prepare. Yes, there has been some recent negative attention from the press. However, the most important opinion to McDonald's is that of its customers. They made it clear that they wanted to see some changes to McDonald's food, such as a reduction in salt, TFAs (Trans Fats) and more options on the menu. In light of this, McDonald's responded to its customer needs. There have been changes to recipes such as the Strawberry Milkshake and the chicken products. McDonald's has reduced the level of Trans Fats from 30 per cent down to two per cent. Nuggets have had their salt reduced by 30 per cent, fries 24 per cent, buns 20 per cent and mayonnaise by 75 per cent. There have also been changes to the menu. Toasted Deli Sandwiches, Salads, Carrot Sticks, Fruit Bags, bottled Vittel Still Mineral Water, Tropicana Orange Juice and semi skimmed Organic Milk are all available; plus there is nutritional information available in restaurants on the reverse of tray liners and comprehensively online at www.mcdonaldsmenu.info. All of this has taken years to put into place - McDonald's has been committed to good food, good choice and listening to customers for long before the negative stories started. But it's only been recently that - through initiatives such as this website - McDonald's has been able to discuss its side of the story directly with people such as yourself.

6. In recent years, in the wake of media such as 'Super Size Me' and 'Fast Food Nation', McDonalds has suffered from some bad press. Have your current initiatives to regain public confidence in your product been successful, and how harmful has the negative attention been to your company, financially?
Thanks for your question and the apologies for a late reply. It's true that the past few years' media attention focusing on McDonald's and its food has been intense but McDonald's believes that the public and the media are starting to recognise the positive moves the company has been making for quite some time. The company is proud to be the recognised leader in the fast food sector and debates and issues surrounding McDonald's are to be expected. People are more and more concerned with what they are eating. McDonald's primary concerns are its customers and the company has always tried to provide them with information about its products. As concerns have been raised by customers about McDonald's or its food, the company has taken proactive steps to ensure that these concerns are settled. What else do we believe is helping our customer relationships? Nutritional information on all McDonald's food is available in restaurants on the back of trayliners, and on most packaging. It is also available via the internet along with full ingredients at www.mcdonalds.co.uk. Customers can also visit www.mcdonaldsmenu.info for even more detailed nutritional information and facts such as GDAs. The Make Up Your Own Mind website has been hugely successful. Over 13,000 questions have been posted to date, with more are arriving daily. Customers and those who have never visited a McDonald's restaurant have embraced the opportunity to ask just about anything about McDonald's and its food and if you get the chance to browse through the 'Questions Answered' page, you can see that there have been some challenging and quirky questions. Whether this openness adds to confidence in McDonald's has yet to be fully analysed. However, the main priority for McDonald's is to continually engage with people, listen to their opinions and suggestions and provide them with good, tasty food and value for money. Financially, there is no clear indication either way to determine a definitive answer. However, it would be fair to say that McDonald’s has seen downturns in customer visits and financial performance in periods immediately following negative media attention, although these downturns could also be related to other variables (such as increased competitor discounting and promotional activity).

7. When I used to buy Big Macs in the late 70s/early 80 (Woolwich and Charing Cross Road Branches) they used to look like the ones you see in the advert and had a distintive fresh smell. Why is it now, on the rare occaisions I buy one, that they all seem like they've been squashed before being put into their box and smell greasy? p.s. What happened to those nice milkshakes you used to sell?
Thank you for your question and sorry for our slow response - unfortunately your question seems to have slipped through the records. The items shown in the pictures or adverts are prepared using the same menu ingredients and are made in line with the same specifications that are given to employees in all McDonald's restaurants. If you are not satisfied with the way your burger looks please return it and ask for a replacement. You will be happy to know that the Milkshakes are still on the McDonald's menu and there is a variety of flavours to choose from.

8. The majority of the McDonalds menu remains very unhealthy and fattening. Proposing that your food "should not form a large part of a person's diet" is in direct conflict with the fact that McDonalds restaurants, and adverts, are EVERYWHERE. Your marketing and expansion is so aggressive that you are threatening the very concept of consumer choice. You promote yourselves alongside sports events/activities and healthy-eating initiatives, while still choking the world on fat, greasy food. Why?
A good diet is a matter of variation, moderation and balance and should be combined with physical activity. McDonald’s aim is to listen to customers and ensures that it offers the right level of choice and variety of menu items to fit into a balanced diet. That’s why over the last few years, McDonald’s has introduced salads and fruit on to the menu, reduced trans fats and salt levels in the food and added nutritional labelling on most packaging, to allow customers to make informed and sensible choices for. However, each person’s diet and lifestyle is a matter of personal choice, and the reality is that, on average, customers eat at McDonald’s two or three times a month, which means they get 97 percent of their nutrition elsewhere. This indicates to McDonald’s that its customers do make their own choices. In fact, that’s what this site is all about. McDonald’s is getting all the facts out into the open to allow people to make up their own minds about the company and its food. Finally, the company is proud of their commitments to funding grassroots football coaching and providing sporting opportunities to local communities. JULY '07 UPDATE: McDonald's UK now uses a new non-hydrogenated, GM free cooking oil. This reduces the levels of Trans Fatty Acids (TFAs) to their lowest possible levels - less than two percent (naturally occurring TFAs make it impossible to reach zero percent). The oil (a blend of sunflower and rapeseed) has been carefully developed to ensure it does not raise saturated fat content, or change the taste. FEBRUARY '08 UPDATE: McDonald’s UK now do not use any hydrogenated oil in any food items across the entire menu

10. Why is Mcdonald's motto: "It's what I eat, and what I do." when it is obvious that you cannot "do" your McDonald's meal?
Firstly apologies for the delay in answering your question, the team has been very busy with all the questions that are pouring in and everybody is working hard to answer them all. 'It's what I eat and what I do' is not McDonald's motto but a message for young people to support the Balanced Active lifestyles programme for kids. It is used to explain that leading a healthy lifestyle is a balance of what you eat - 'energy in' and what you do - 'energy out'.

11. How much of what is written in Eric Schlosser's books (Fast Food Nation/Chew On This) is actually true?
McDonald's finds that the assessment of its business in the books ‘Fast Food Nation and ‘Chew on This’ is harsh, and the company rebuts the allegations that they propose. McDonald's feels that the information they contain is far removed from the facts. The progress that McDonald's has made in its procedures and practises throughout the entire business is substantial, and is a reflection of the progressive and modern direction that the business has been heading in. You might be interested in hearing a recent and open interview between McDonald's CEO Steve Easterbrook and the author of Fast Food Nation/Chew on this, Eric Schlosser on the BBC website. The link to the interview is here: http://search.bbc.co.uk/cgi-bin/search/results.pl?scope=all&edition=d&q=Easterbrook+schlosser&go=Search If you feel any questions were not properly answered then why not ask them again on this site? The Make Up Your Own Mind team will try to supply a more satisfactory answer. (August 2007)

14. y duz u hav yellow archs and y can u not get green ones. i wuld like green ones
The 'Golden Arches' is one of the most recognised logos in the world. They were used as part of the standard building design of the first McDonald's restaurants in the 1950's: a pair of stylised arches, one at each side of a walk-up hamburger stand. When viewed from an angle, the design was reminiscent of the letter M. It was then incorporated into the company's logo. The yellow colour is warm and inviting, just like the restaurants, and there are no plans to change this iconic symbol to green. Sorry. (September 2007)
