- 1. Does every restaurant perform litter patrols? If so, how far to they go to and how does this fit in with the work performed with local authority street cleaners?
-
Thank you for your question. It is McDonald’s national policy that every restaurant performs a minimum of three litter patrols per day. Each litter patrol should travel a minimum of 100 metres from the restaurant, and many will go further. Restaurants will have a map of local litter black spots that they will try to incorporate where possible into their litter patrol routes. We do not have formal arrangements with local authorities to co-ordinate with their street cleaners, but many of our restaurants are in contact with local authorities to ensure that we can help with local litter issues as much as possible.

Thank you for your question. A recent report by Keep Britain acknowledged that McDonald's does more than most to tackle litter. We are very happy that most of our customers take a responsible attitude to litter but unfortunately a small minority do not. To help combat that, McDonald's has been signed up since 2004 to the Government's voluntary code of practice to help reduce litter created by food on the go. We ask all customers to dispose of their litter responsibly and provide plenty of bins both in and around our restaurants. Each restaurant is expected to send out a minimum of three litter patrols each day, who clear all litter - not just McDonald's - up to 100m away from the restaurant. Currently, in Birmingham and Manchester, we are trialling a number of the stores getting together to fund a full time litter picker.
