1. What adhesives do you use in your packaging?
Firstly, many apologies for the very slow response to your question, as the site went through a few changes and technical updates some questions had slipped through, so thank you for your patience in waiting for your answer. As regards to your question, glue, similar to what you might purchase in an art shop is used in McDonald’s packaging. (January 08)

However, the opinions of customers is very important to McDonald’s, and the company is currently trialling some new Toasted Deli Sandwich packaging. If the trial is successful, then the company will be considering a change at some point in 2007. (April 2007)

5. Does McDonald's currently use styrofoam in any part of its food packaging, transport, or any other part of its business as a whole?
By ‘Styrofoam’, it sounds like you mean polystyrene or foam. McDonald’s UK moved away from foam hot cups about five years ago, and introduced paper cups instead, which is still the case today. In addition, the company moved away from foam to carton board for sandwich clamshell packaging about three years ago. The only remaining packaging item in foam is the breakfast packaging – the lid and bases. This packaging currently allows the right balance in terms of keeping the food hot. McDonald’s is always looking at ways to optimise the packaging at European and global levels.

6. Is it true that only 0.00003% of your collected packaging (over the last few years) was recycled?
Currently, McDonald’s UK doesn’t recycle used customer packaging as this poses some challenges due to left over food residues on the packaging that prevent it from being recycled at standard recycling mills. However, the company is currently running trials to introduce customer packaging waste recycling in restaurants and is also exploring opportunities such as the generation of green electricity from waste. The large majority of McDonald’s restaurants in the UK do currently recycle all their cardboard waste. McDonald's aims to make sure that as much of its packaging as possible is made from renewable resources. Bags, tray liners and cup carriers are made from 100 percent recycled paper, and packaging for burgers, French Fries, Chicken McNuggets and Apple Pies is made from 72 percent recycled paper.

7. You state that your containers are 100% recycled. I have asked a high ranking paper group who say that 100% recycled paper can not be achieved, as agents such as bleach and other solutions are used to breakdown the paper to reform it again. Is this the case?
McDonald’s states that the hamburger boxes are made from 72 percent recycled material. Food safety laws do not allow restaurants to use 100 percent recycled material for food containers. However, the company does use 100 percent recycled material for items such as tray liners and bags. You are correct that agents are needed to break down the paper, so more than 100 tonnes of paper waste is required by the process in order to produce 100 tonnes of recycled paper. However with the 100 percent recycled material products, McDonald’s can assure you that they do not contain any virgin paper, only used paper materials.

11. On the bottom of the Happy Meal boxes , there used to be a small picture of a Happy Meal box with a smiley face on. It had a dotted line to cut around. Can you tell me what these were for?
The smiley face was used as the old Happy Meal logo. McDonald’s replaced it at the end of 2003 with the current logo, and the old smiley face logo has now been removed from the packaging.
