- 1. Please can you tell me exactly how many McDonald's restaurant operate in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland). Please don't give me an answer of "approximately 1,200", but an accurate figure which I am sure will be on a company database, thank you.

Thanks for your question. We currently operate around 1200 restaurants in the UK. Unfortunately we cannot be more specific as the exact figure is constantly changing due to temporary and permanent store openings and closures. (February 2011)

Thanks for your question. In 2010 within the UK, there were approximately 1200 restaurants, of which over 50% are franchises. This information comes from McDonald’s UK head office. (January 2011)

Thank you for your question. Customer convenience and research is the driving force behind new restaurant locations. The company is committed to responsible growth and works closely with local planning officers and community groups when developing a new restaurant. When McDonald’s opens a restaurant it is a long term proposition, and local knowledge is key to choosing new locations. McDonald’s relies on discussions with local managers who are closely involved at the grass roots level with local communities. The company strives to offer greater convenience to customers whilst responding sympathetically to local circumstances. Without the support of the communities in which they trade, the restaurants have no business. McDonald’s always takes a sensitive approach to new restaurant environments, working with planning and conservation officers to preserve buildings of architectural merit and to improve the townscape. Additionally areas near main roads can be chosen because they provide greater accessibility to McDonald's customers. It should be also noted that McDonald's still operate restaurants in cities and town centre.
Currently, there are approximately 1,200 McDonald's restaurants in the UK. As for our plans for 2009, McDonald's would ideally look to open 20 new restaurants but in the current economic climate this may prove challenging target.

We have learnt that Halal is only popular with a very small percentage of our customers and to offer it we would need to make significant changes to our kitchen procedures and supply chain. Given this, we have decided that we are not currently in a position to roll out Halal food in the UK.

You may also be interested know that for a limited time only and in response to customer demand, the McDonald’s restaurant in Southall has been chosen to trial selected Halal menu items and include: Chicken Selects, McChicken Sandwich, Chicken Premiere, Chicken McNuggets, French Fries, Hash Brown, Filet O’ Fish and Apple Pies. Firstly apologies for the delay in answering your question, the team has been very busy with all the questions that are pouring in and everybody is working hard to answer them all. In terms of overall building size McDonald’s has a number of very large restaurants such as 8-10, Oxford St, London or Lord St, Liverpool. However, if based on seating capacity the largest McDonald’s restaurant is in Argylle St, Glasgow.

Restaurant location criteria will vary depending upon the likely sales generators. In the high street, shopping centres and retail/leisure parks, McDonald's will generally rely on the strength of the shop units and brands available to customers nearby to determine whether or not the company should open a restaurant. In the case of a roadside site, it will generally be down to prominence, accessibility and the volume of passing vehicles. For other sites, decisions will be based upon factors including the likely catchment population of the area. In addition, McDonald’s has restaurants in specialised locations such as railway stations, airports and theme parks. On occasion new sites will encompass several of the sale generator categories listed above but each decision will have to take account of the existing restaurant network.
