3. what is Mcdonalds' response to critics who argue that McDonalds' food and advertising are directly responsible for rising rates of obesity, in both children and adults?
Thanks for your question. It is fair to say that marketing and advertising are a widely accepted and indeed an integral part of any successful business, including McDonald’s. McDonald's objective is to ensure that its customers are offered a choice of foods with full nutritional information so that individuals can make the decision themselves, or on behalf of their children, on what they eat as part of a healthy and balanced lifestyle. It is not the company's role to dictate what people should or shouldn't eat. McDonald’s aim is to be as open and honest about sourcing of food as possible, which is part of the reason for this website. (March 2011)

8. Hello, I am a project, my question is 'Should fast food companies such as McDonalds be allowed to advertise?' Would it be possible for someone (the manager if possible) to tell me why they think it is okay to advertise fast food when it can cause diseases and obesity and also why, in your latest adverts you are not showing images of your food but focusing on where it comes from? Thank you Oskar Lovick.

9. how much does mcdonalds spend on advertising a year ?
Thanks for your question. We do not disclose issues that are commercially sensitive like our advertising budgets, as this would offer an advantage to our competitors. However, marketing and advertising are often integral parts of any business and the spend is usually in line with the size and profitability of that company. (December 2010)

10. Why is it you 'stress' that the chicken bacon onion has three ingredients when it clearly also has cheese and lettuce, I recognise these as ingredients do you?
Thank you for your question. The Chicken, Bacon & Onion (CBO) does indeed contain cheese and lettuce, along with a tasty sauce - all of which sit in a sesame-topped rectangular bun. However, in our advertising we choose to focus on the most important aspects of the product that we feel make it stand out as a promotional item - namely the new taste combination of chicken, bacon and onion. 11. Do you think McDonalds advertising campaigns encourage premature consumerism in children? If not, why not?
McDonald's realises that marketing to children is a sensitive issue and the company is careful to talk to children in a responsible way in all its marketing. McDonald's recognises that for the most part, it is parents who make the decisions about the food their children eat. A lot of time is spent considering the opinions of parents in order to create advertising that conveys positive messages about food choices, for example, mixing in fruit and milk or water with their Happy Meal treats, plus the importance of children using their imagination and taking part in physical activity. For example, the Shrek promotion branded carrot sticks, fruit bags and organic milk with characters to help parents who want to encourage their children to choose these Happy Meal options. The company bases a lot of these decisions on conversations with parents, to ensure that they are comfortable with the messages McDonald's communicates to them and their children.

12. do you realize that macdonalds has a big impact on obesity and chilrens choice on what to eat? having salads and burgers in the same place obviously makes the kids choose the burgers. and the advertising shows kids playing sports and stuff but the food is so unhealthy that doesent really show good advertising skill does it?
McDonald's believes that the national obesity issue is a shared responsibility and a complex one. The Company's starting point has been to look at recipe improvements and providing parents will all the nutritional facts. That's why McDonald's has been committed to lowering the salt, sugar and fat levels in Happy Meal menu items over recent years whilst being careful not to undermine the taste. Further, there has been improved nutritional information included on most packaging and the backs of all trayliners in restaurants. In terms of advertising to children, McDonald's has always been and will remain a responsible marketer and obviously complies with the rigorous regulations in place in the UK. The company also looks for ways that its marketing messages can reinforce positive food messages and encourage a healthy, balanced lifestyle with the children through its advertising and in restaurants. McDonald’s has always been aware of the context in which it operates. It recognises the need for it to meet the requirements of society and customers through the food and experience that it provides. That is why, over recent years, the company has added new choices to its menu, such as Organic Semi-Skimmed Milk, Orange Juice, Water, Fruit Bags and Carrot Sticks. Furthermore, the majority of Happy Meal items (with the exception of the Cheeseburger, Milkshakes and non-diet fizzy drinks) are all rated as not being high in fat, salt and sugar. Many of McDonald’s family customers view a trip to the restaurants as a treat that their children enjoy.

13. In relation to the new law restricting advertising less healthy products on children's programming 1. What Marketing communications used prior to the new law, 2. How has the new law affected the marketing communications of the company? 3. Have sales figures been affected for certain products? 4. Have new marketing communications been developed to combat these changes in the law?
Thank you for your question. McDonald's takes it’s marketing to children very seriously. McDonald's is fully aware that children enjoy its food and that parents often bring their families to the restaurants as a treat once in a while. With this in mind, McDonald's is very careful about how it sets about marketing not just its products, but the company's ethos and spirit towards fun and a healthy appetite for life. McDonald's also realises that marketing to children is a sensitive issue and the company is careful to talk to children in a responsible way. For the most part, it is parents who make the decisions about the food their children eat, and at McDonald's a lot of time is spent considering the opinions of parents in order to create marketing and advertising that conveys positive messages to children about food choices. For example: The Happy Meal is specially tailored for children and the company's advertisements for Happy Meals combine smart eating messages (e.g. clear indication on the importance of getting " 5 a day " and hydration) and information to stimulate kids' imaginations and creativity. All Happy Meal advertisements comply with the OFCOM regulations on advertising to children. These specific guidelines are designed to closely control marketing to children. McDonald's ensures all its advertising follows both the spirit and the letter of the OFCOM regulations For any more information, we suggest you visit our website and download our 'Marketing information pack for students'. This has been developed specially to answer your questions and is packed with useful information. 14. Why does McDonalds promote such false advertisement? The only important thing you want is money, you don't care about the people, so many people die of you unhealthy food, why do you serve it? And why do you treat animals so poorly, would you want to be treated that way, huh?
Thank you for your comments. This is what the Make Up Your Own Mind Site is all about, allowing anybody to discuss issues or strongly held views they might have relating to McDonald's. Firstly, it is important to point out that McDonald's does not promote or market anything under false pretences. However as you rightly point out, McDonald's is a business and a very successful one. So yes, McDonald's wants to provide good returns to its shareholders and yes, growth is important. The company would never pretend otherwise. However, these business aims can not be divorced from the simple fact that McDonald's cares about its customers; if it didn't take into account what customers expect from companies such as McDonald's, there would be no success to talk of. That is the reason why the company takes time and effort to not only improve the menu, introduce new options and update its restaurants but also tries to set a positive example when it comes to other important issues such as animal welfare, the environment, employment and corporate responsibility on a global scale. Nutritionists believe that individual foods should not be classified as 'healthy' or 'unhealthy', and that it is more a matter of balance. It is better to have the fundamentals of moderation, variation and a regular amount of physical activity, which all contribute towards a balanced lifestyle. McDonald's believe that its food can be enjoyed responsibly by anybody who follows these fundamentals. The company has spent a lot of time and money adding different options and accompanying nutritional information so that its customers can make an informed choice based on their wants and needs. But, at the end of the day, McDonald's is a burger company and its icon products will always be the cornerstones of its menu and this is driven by what customers want, not profit margins. McDonald's takes the welfare of animals very seriously. For this reason, McDonald's refuses to work with any supplier that does not adhere to the company’s high standards, and those required by UK and EU legislation. Every step in the supply chain is monitored according to the McDonald's Agricultural Assurance programme. Furthermore McDonald's insists that all of its suppliers adhere to very strict standards of animal welfare and independent audits are conducted on a regular basis. You may also like to know that no animal used in the McDonald's supply chain is ever caged and that, the company was awarded an RSPCA Alternative Award for commitment to improving animal welfare in the ‘fast food’ category.
