- 1. Hi, I would like to know more about lettuce and buns ,for example where do they come from?
-
Thanks for your question. Our lettuce is predominantly sourced from the UK in the spring and summer months, and Spain in the autumn and winter months. However, there is also a small percentage from Holland and France. Our regular buns are baked by one of our bakery product suppliers in Heywood near Manchester or Banbury, Oxfordshire. You can find out more about McDonald’s food at www.mcdonalds.co.uk and then clicking on the ‘Food’ tab (August 2011).

Is this backed up by fair trading? Especially to British producers? Why are your buns sourced from Germany? We can bake in Britain, and make pattys. Surely it would be cheaper and more sustainable producing things here, it will cut on transport time and cost.
-
Thanks for your question. McDonald's believes it pays our suppliers a fair price that is competitive for the market. We do source some bakery products from Germany, as not all UK bakeries have the equipment to make products for us to our specification. The vast majority of our burger buns are made in the UK except for the M Burger bun and the Chicken Legend®’s Brown Bakehouse Roll which are baked by suppliers in Germany. With regards to our beef patties, all of our beef is 100% British and Irish and all of our beef patties are made by our sole beef supplier in Scunthorpe. (June 2011)

What are these? Delicious Digg Reddit Facebook StumbleUpon - 9. Are your buns additive free or do you put that awful preservative calcium Propionate in them?
-
Thank you for your question. The Big Mac Bun, Hamburger and Cheeseburger Bun and the Quarter Pounder Bun all contain the additive Calcium Propionate. This acts as a preservative to prevent mould growth and is an ingredient which is commonly used in breads you may buy at the supermarket.
Where necessary, McDonald’s UK minimises the use of food additives and uses natural additives wherever possible.

What are these? Delicious Digg Reddit Facebook StumbleUpon - 11. is it true that the buns you use contain more sugar than actual sugar?
-
No, this is not true. Sugar is a traditional ingredient in bread used to help the yeast develop and it caramelises when the bun is toasted to give the characteristic toasted appearance. The burger buns contain the following amounts of sugar: The Big Mac Bun – 5.3 g, the Regular Bun – 4. 0 g and the Quarter Pounder Bun – 4. 4 g. This amount of sugar per bun works out to be roughly, 6 per cent, 4 per cent and 5 per cent of your Guideline Daily Amount respectively. The Regular Bun is used in the Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Filet-o-Fish and Mayo Chicken Sandwiches. What are these? Delicious Digg Reddit Facebook StumbleUpon - 12. Why do you use sugar in your buns? Doesn't this defeat the point of healthier food (i.e. chicken salad deli) as even the buns are covered in sugar? I know the caramelisation helps the buns to look more toasted, but can there be a better way to do this?
-
Thank you for your question. The bread is not sprinkled in sugar. Sugar is a traditional ingredient in bread used in small quantities to help the yeast develop and it caramelises when the bun is toasted to give the characteristic toasted appearance. The burger buns contain the following amounts of sugar: The Big Mac Bun – 5.3 g, the Regular Bun – 4. 0 g and the Quarter Pounder Bun – 4. 4 g.
