Make Up Your Own Mind has been set up specifically to answer questions about McDonald's within the UK and it is hard for us to answer specific questions about other markets. Following the conclusion of our limited trial of Halal certified chicken products in one restaurant, we have no current plans to roll out Halal in the UK.

What are these? Delicious Digg Reddit Facebook StumbleUpon - 3. Where is the meat (that we claim is halal) come from that is served in the Southall restaurants. Is it still processed by McKey in Milton Keynes. This question has been asked by some of my Asian collegues and a few friends.
-
Thank you for your question. McDonald's worked very closely with its supply chain to ensure that the chicken we served as part of the Halal trial at the Southall restaurant was 100% Halal; furthermore it was certified by the Halal Food Authority. We think that you are asking whether the chicken was delivered with our usual restaurant deliveries, and the answer is that it was not: it was kept separate throughout the entire process. Please note however that the trial in the Southall restaurant has now ended and Halal options are no longer available on the menu.

-
Thank you for your question. The trial is taking place in the Southall Restaurant, London, where a select number of Halal food items are available on the menu. The company is still gathering feedback from customers and any future developments will be made known once everything has been thoroughly analysed and discussed.

SEPTEMBER '09 TRIAL RESULT: McDonald’s began this trial because we wanted to assess customer demand for certified Halal food in our UK restaurants. We have learnt that Halal is only popular with a very small percentage of our customers and to offer it we would need to make significant changes to our kitchen procedures and supply chain. Given this, we have decided that we are not currently in a position to roll out Halal food in the UK.

At the moment, McDonald's UK lacks the necessary infrastructure throughout its supply chain to guarantee the requirements of Halal while ensuring the company retains its high standards of welfare and ingredient quality. However, in response to the growing demand for Halal food items from some customers, McDonald’s is conducting a trial in a restaurant in Southall, London. This restaurant offers a selection of products that meet the standards required by the Halal Food Authority and McDonald’s animal welfare standards. The results of this trial will be analysed against the views and requirements of the whole local community and a decision taken on whether this will rolled out to other restaurants in relevant areas of the country.(Dec 08)

At the moment, McDonald's UK lacks the necessary infrastructure throughout its supply chain to guarantee the requirements of Halal while ensuring the company retains its high standards of welfare, ingredient quality, etc. However, it is something McDonald's is looking into against a number of considerations - both customer and company related. You will be happy to hear that McDonald's is trialing Halal chicken at a restaurant in Southall, London. (November 2007)

What are these? Delicious Digg Reddit Facebook StumbleUpon - 7. Why is McDonald’s considering and even trialling Halal meat in a Christian country? I find this grossly inconsiderate to the majority of the English people who are Christian and would have issues with eating meat prepared in such a way. What would you say if, finding it a success in one store, you decide to use it in all stores, and then Christians decide to stop eating at your restaurants?

McDonald's prides itself on the role it takes in each local community and its business is driven by listening to customers in order to provide the food and service they want. You might have noticed on this site alone, there are a number of questions asking about Halal food options. In response to this, McDonald's, as you quite rightly state, has put Halal procedures in place for its chicken menu items to test whether this is welcomed by the local community and whether it is sustainable. In evaluating the trial's success, all views from the local community will be taken into consideration. And, should it prove successful, the plan would be to offer Halal food only in those restaurants that have a requirement for this and are within a ten minute drive of a restaurant serving non-Halal food. in that way, McDonald's hopes to make as many of its customers happy as possible.

None of the items on the menu at McDonald's are certified as Kosher or Halal, including those vegetarian items such as the fries or icecream, because of the additional requirements for halal certification beyond purely consideration of ingredients. However, McDonald's has a Halal chicken trial underway at a restaurant in Southall, London. (September 2007)

No, while items such as the fries or shakes are of course vegetarian, none of McDonald's food is officially certified Halal. What are these? Delicious Digg Reddit Facebook StumbleUpon - 10. I find the slaughter of Halal meat both inhumane and barbaric. I'm sure that a large number of your customers feel the same. Why are you so keen to appease Islam but offend the silent majority? Before you can accuse me of being a member of the far right I'd like to point out that I am in fact black.
-
It's worth noting that the high animal welfare standards employed for the slaughter of animals within the McDonald's supply chain is not compromised in any way by the requirements of Halal. The RSPCA and other animal welfare experts as well as the Halal Food Authority have been involved to ensure that all standards continue to be met. The one-restaurant trial is based in a predominantly Muslim area of London and the company has received many requests for more Halal options on the menu. That's why a trial is in hand for the chicken range menu items. It has been set up to look not only at the infrastructure and logistics involved in such an initiative but will also garner the views of all members of the local community. If all of the criteria set are met and a decision to roll this out on a greater scale is taken, only certain restaurants will take up the option and always in sites where there is a non-Halal restaurant within a ten minute drive. Customers can then decide for themselves as to which restaurant they choose to visit.

What are these? Delicious Digg Reddit Facebook StumbleUpon - 11. If Halal items are introduced as a regular part of the menu, will we be given the option to be served with normal products?
-
A trial is being conducted at one McDonald's restaurant. As it's a trial to look into the feasibility of offering Halal chicken (and fish) menu items to customers that would like this option, the company is not offering non-Halal versions of these items at the trial restaurant. If the trial is extended to other restaurants, one of the stipulations will be that there is a non-Halal McDonald's restaurant within a suitable driving distance to satisfy any customers that might want non-Halal chicken items. Today, McDonald's UK lacks the necessary infrastructure in its supply chain to guarantee the requirements of Halal. It is something the company is currently looking at, however.

What are these? Delicious Digg Reddit Facebook StumbleUpon - 15. I am dismayed to read that you are 'considering making your products halal.' Is McDonalds trying to appeal to a Muslim audience in particular? I am a meat eater but wouldn't be willing to buy meat slaughtered in this way because I believe it to be cruel. I'm pleased you're answering your critics but this is a step too far! I'm disappointed that you are pandering to this minority audience and would be interested as to why you are doing this...does your MR suggest this is adviseable?

The Halal issue is complex. McDonald's is currently reviewing the possibility of introducing some Halal products in its restaurants; however no decision has yet been reached. It is also unlikely that this would involve a wholesale conversion of meat to Halal and more likely that a specific range would be introduced so you would not have to eat Halal meat if you did not wish to.
