Salt in Salads
On 31st July, The Sun reported research claims that salads at McDonald’s contain nearly a third more salt than a Big Mac and fries. The article stated that Consensus Action on Salt and Health surveyed 156 ready-made salads from the high street and found that nearly a fifth of the salads had more than 2g of salt recommended for a meal. McDonald’s Crispy Chicken Caesar salad was reported to contain 3.5g of salt whilst the Big Mac and small fries contains 2.5g.
Comments from Charlotte, Company Nutritionist, McDonald’s UK
“We offer both our salad dressings and croutons in separate sachets so that customers can choose whether or not to use them on the salads. Leaving out the dressing can significantly reduce the salt content, as customers can see if they go the McDonald's website, www.mcdonalds.co.uk and check out the Nutrition Counter in the Eat Smart section.
We hope we have made it easy for our customers to find out the salt content in our food by providing nutritional information on our packaging as well as on the back of trayliners in each of our restaurants.
We have worked hard over recent years to make significant reductions in salt levels to many of our menu items such as reducing salt in Chicken McNuggets by 30%, French Fries by 24%, ketchup by 23% and our low fat mayonnaise by 75%. We will continue to look at ways to reduce the salt levels in our food even further.”
