Salt levels in fast food

The Independent has reported that many meals in fast food restaurants contain shocking levels of salt according to a report released by Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH). The campaigning group surveyed 346 food and drink items from Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut and McDonald's, finding that Pizza Hut pizzas contained more than twice the daily recommended amount of salt for an adult whilst very salty meals were also found at KFC and Burger King. McDonald's was found to be the best performer of the surveyed restaurants with no individual products or meals containing over 6g maximum daily allowance for adults.

Comments from Charlotte, Company Nutritionist, McDonald's UK

“We have worked very hard over recent years, in consultation with the Food Standards Agency, to make significant reductions in salt levels to many of our menu items - reducing salt in Chicken McNuggets by 30%, French Fries by 24% and ketchup by 23% - and the most recent CASH report reflects these changes. We are pleased to see in particular that the survey cites a McDonald's meal option as containing the lowest salt content in both the children and adult categories.”
